The three of us have just returned from a great weekend in Auckland in preparation for The Big Shwop on Sunday 14 November. The Big Shwop is being held in The Great Room at The Langham – probably the finest space in the whole country. If you haven’t yet seen The Great Room, than here is yet another reason to make sure you line yourself up to shwop till you drop experience not to be missed on Sunday 14th November.
The Great Room is a vision of luxury and style, but it is not just the sumptuous textiles, fittings and finishings that make The Great Room oh-so-fine, but also the green bones on which these sit.
You see, in May 2010, The Great Room at The Langham, Auckland was awarded the New Zealand Hotel Council and Ministry of Tourism award for ‘innovation in sustainability’.
“The Great Room is not simply a room. It is total concept from start to finish, using the highest quality materials and fabrics in its construction, state-of-art audio visual installations and innovative design” says Mr van Vorsselen, Managing Director of The Langham, Auckland.
Its evident in their approach to the lighting for example. The 1200 sq metre ballroom at The Langham, Auckland formerly had 35 chandeliers in it. They had been a feature of the hotel since the property was first built, but they were hugely inefficient. In creating The Great Room, the chandelier crystals were reused and re-configured into new chandeliers that reflect a classic design yet do not require such dense use of lighting. With just this re-design of the chandeliers, an energy saving has been produced of 20.5 kilowatts per hour.
The Langham and The Big Shwop have more than a little in common – both knowing that we can be ever-so-stylish and not forsake sustainability for it. It’s a beautiful, beautiful space and we look forward to sharing The Big Shwop experience with you within it.
